Ships are becoming the next tens of billions of application scenarios for lithium batteries, which has attracted many battery giants into the game.

South Korean media reported that South Korean shipbuilding company Samsung Heavy Industries stated that it has developed a lithium-ion battery power system for ships, which has been approved by the famous Norwegian shipping company DVL-GL and issued a certificate.

Samsung Heavy Industries said that in addition to environmental protection, the lithium-ion battery system can effectively control the ship’s generators and reduce fuel costs.

At the same time, Samsung Heavy Industries also stated that it will cooperate with the Finnish power equipment manufacturer Wartsila to develop a ship energy storage system.

It is understood that the ship's lithium battery system is developed and manufactured by Samsung SDI and can be applied to any type of ship. Prior to this, Samsung SDI will also provide lithium battery systems for South Korean military submarines.

With the increasing competition in the power battery market, a large number of lithium battery companies have begun to adjust their business development directions and look for new market segments. Electric bicycles, energy storage, power tools and other fields have become new directions for many lithium battery companies to actively explore.

The green and intelligent development trend of the shipping industry gave birth to the birth of electric ships. Facing the increasing pressure of energy saving and emission reduction in the shipping industry, the domestic exploration of new energy in the shipping industry is accelerating. For power battery companies, the tens of billions of blue ocean market needs to be opened urgently.

At present, more and more battery companies have begun to turn their attention to the field of ships and develop targeted lithium battery systems for ships, but there are not many companies that can pass through product quality and technology.

According to data from tripartite market research institutions, the domestic electric boat market has reached 5.63 billion in 2016 and is expected to expand to 9.63 billion by 2021. The market prospects are promising. At present, the large-scale promotion and application of electric ships is constrained by the lack of relevant standards for battery electric ships, imperfect charging facilities, limited power supply capacity of the power grid, and unclear business models, etc. All parties are in urgent need of joint efforts.

As of June 2019, the number of electric marine lithium-ion battery companies certified by classification societies in China is relatively small, with 11 certified companies and 25 certified battery products. The market competition is relatively small. From the perspective of the certified product technical route, the square shape is the main one, accounting for 76%; from the current actual use of electric boat power batteries, the LFP square power battery with better overall performance in terms of safety, cycle and rate is the mainstream .

Internationally, leading ship and battery manufacturers such as hybrid power and marine battery supplier Corvus Energy, German battery manufacturer Akasol AG, Nidec Ansaldo Industrial Systems, Saft Group and other leading ship and battery manufacturers have developed new types of The ship's lithium battery system uses lithium batteries to power hybrid cargo ships or pure electric speedboats/cruise ships.

In China, two battery companies, CATL and Yiwei Lithium Energy, have taken the lead in making breakthroughs in the field of ship lithium batteries.

In early January of this year, CATL and China Classification Society (CCS) Wuhan Institute of Standards and Technology signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Fujian. The two parties will jointly start the research and revision of safety regulations for electric ships, establish a safety regulation system from battery cells, modules, battery management systems to battery systems, and promote the healthy and sustainable development of lithium battery safety applications on water.

In June, the first Electric Ship Innovation and Development Seminar was held in Ningde, Fujian. At the seminar, CATL signed a cooperation agreement with multiple parties.

Regarding the application scenarios of marine lithium-ion batteries, Wu Kai, vice president of CATL, introduced that lithium iron phosphate batteries have become the best choice for marine power batteries at this stage due to their high safety, long life, low cost, and balanced performance.

It is understood that CATL has overcome technical problems such as safety, long battery life, high power, and long life. The battery pack system is designed with a battery pack that meets the protection level of IP67 and above, which can effectively avoid safety risks caused by water vapor, salt spray and dust. Meet the IP rating requirements throughout the life cycle.

On June 28, Yiwei Lithium Energy issued an announcement stating that the company and Shanghai Hanshun Shipping Co., Ltd. signed the "New Hybrid Electric Bulk Carrier Project Cooperation Agreement", announcing the world’s first batch of 5,000-ton new energy bulk carriers ( Diamond 5K series) project officially started.

It is reported that Yiwei Lithium Energy will cooperate with Shanghai Hanshun to complete the design, production, installation, commissioning, inspection, technical support and after-sales service of this series of new energy ship project battery systems, and provide the best battery system solutions. Up to now, the total installed capacity of Yiwei's lithium-energy marine batteries has exceeded 30MWh, and the number of ships loaded with new energy has exceeded 100.

At present, excellent domestic and foreign battery companies, including Samsung SDI, CATL, and Yiwei Lithium Energy, are all paying attention to the marine lithium battery market. With the advancement of ship electrification, the market demand for lithium batteries for ships will further increase, which will attract more and more lithium battery companies to enter the market, and battery companies that take the lead in this field will gain development opportunities.

At the same time, the electrification of ships has also opened up a new development path for lithium iron phosphate batteries, which is expected to further increase the market share of lithium iron phosphate batteries.
